CORDOVA, Alabama — State and federal emergency officials pledged support to the city of Cordova as city officials work to provide long term housing for tornado survivors in light of a ban against single-wide mobile homes.

Jeff Byard, state coordinating officer for the Alabama Emergency Agency, and Mike Byrne, the FEMA official in charge of tornado recovery in Alabama, joined Mayor Jack Scott at a news conference to tout recovery efforts in the city.

Scott reiterated his city’s plan to think long-term and not temporary. He said efforts are under way to build the city back stronger and better.

Scott has come under fire for enforcing an ordinance that keeps single-wide mobile homes out of the city. Some residents said that blocks tornado survivors from getting the temporary FEMA mobile homes.

Scott said temporary trailers are not the solution.

He urged the city to unite in rebuilding.
