MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Alabamians have filed an estimated 65,000 insurance claims related to last week’s storms, according to an estimate compiled by the Alabama Department of Insurance.

It was developed using claims counts provided by various insurers, the department said in a press release.

“With some areas just reopening, it is likely that people will wait through the weekend, and claims will spike again as early as Monday,” Insurance Commissioner Jim Ridling said in a statement.

He encouraged Alabamians to contact the department with questions at 1-800-433-3966. The Department will be open for telephone calls on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. It is also staffing various disaster recovery centers established by FEMA.
