MOBILE, Alabama — Jury selection in the trial against former sex crimes prosecutor Steve Giardini was derailed today after a potential juror was heard joking about the case.
“Hang him high,” the juror reportedly said in a break room. “I’ve got the rope. Who’s got the horse?”
Defense attorneys for Giardini, who is charged with enticing a child for sex and soliciting child pornography, argued that the entire pool of 45 jurors should be dismissed.
Jury selection, which was expected to end today, is now continuing at Mobile Government Plaza. The potential jurors who were inside the break room are being individually questioned about what they heard.
Giardini, 50, worked for the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office for nearly 20 years, including prosecuting sex crimes for the Child Advocacy Center.
He resigned in 2009 after an FBI agent arrived at his house with a search warrant. He is accused of carrying on a 3½-month online relationship, including asking the girl for a nude photograph and trying to meet her.
The Alabama Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting the case.
Escambia County Circuit Judge Bradley E. Byrne was appointed to the case after Mobile County judges recused themselves.
