HOMEWOOD, Alabama — A sudden storm this afternoon that blew through Jefferson County downed several trees, including some that fell on homes in Homewood.
The worst of the storm is over for the Birmingham area, National Weather Service meteorologist Michael Garrison said shortly before 4 p.m. At its worst, the storm brought 61 mph hour winds to the Birmingham airport, he said.
Homewood Police Sgt. Andrew Didcoct said trees are down on Lakeshore Drive and Valley Avenue. Also police headquarters is operating on generator power as a result of the storm.
No one was injured when the homes were by trees, Didcoct said.
Garrison said the worst of the storm is in St. Clair and Blount counties and is headed toward Gadsden. By 5 p.m., it should be in Fort Payne, he said.
Though heavy winds are gone, rain should fall throughout the night in the Birmingham area, Garrison said.
The storm left 41,000 Alabama Power customers in the Birmingham area without power, said spokesman Ike Pigott.
