MOBILE, Alabama — A series of strong to severe thunderstorms brrought much-needed rain to southwest Alabama today, but also touched off a tornado warning in south Mobile County and dumped hail of various sizes in a number of areas.

The National Weather Service said a tornado warning for Mobile County expired at 4 p.m. without any preliminary reports of damage or injuries.

What was believed to be tornadic weather headed through southwest Mobile County from Grand Bay toward Bayor La Batre before it diminished. At one point, about 3:45 p.m., the countywide siren warning system went off, including in downtown Mobile.

The weather service said there was a report of downed trees and a damaged barn 3 miles east of Waynesboro, Miss., but that damage came from a storm that was different from the one in south Mobile County.

There also were several hail reports scattered across the region. The weather service reported the following this afternoon:

Penny- to quarter-sized hail in and around Grove Hill and Thomasville shortly before 12:30 p.m., and pea-sized hail in the Flat Rock community of Conecuh County. 

Penny- to marble-sized hail at 1:15 p.m. near Wilmer Elementary School.

Pea-sized hail in Washington County – at 2:14 p.m. in Toxey, and 2:30 p.m. in Leroy. 

Additinally, the weather service said a tree was reported down on Ala. 5 near Thomasville.
