Suffragan Bishop John McKee Sloan, known across the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama as “Kee” Sloan, won election this afternoon to take the place of his current boss, retiring Bishop Henry N. Parsley, as head of the diocese.

“I want to thank you all for trusting me,” Sloan said after the election. “I’m honored and humbled to accept this nomination.”

Parsley said he would begin seeking approval from the 108 bishops around the country and that he hopes to have them approve the decision by October. Sloan would then be elevated to bishop of the diocese in a ceremony on Jan. 7 at Cathedral Church of the Advent, where today’s voting took place.

Sloan won easily on the first ballot, with 68 clergy votes out of 118 and 145 lay votes out of 270.

Finishing second was the Rev. William Charles “Chuck” Treadwell III of Waco, Texas, who received 37 clergy votes and 101 lay votes.

The Rev. Clare Fischer-Davies, of Providence, R.I., vying to be the first woman bishop of the diocese, received nine clergy votes and 19 lay votes.

The Rev. Kenneth L. Chumbley of Springfield, Mo., finished fourth, with four clergy votes and five lay votes.
