DOTHAN, Alabama — A hit-and-run accident prompted a chase and a shootout leaving a suspect dead and a deputy injured, according to reports and statements from law enforcement officials. [RickeyStokesNews has minute-by-minute coverage, with photos and video]

A driver fled from an accident about 10 p.m. on West Main Street, prompting Alabama State Troopers, Houston County Sheriff Deputies and Dothan Police to give chase.

Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes said the suspect waved a pistol out the window of the vehicle during the chase.

A deputy maneuvered a patrol car to stop the suspect, but ended up door-to-door with the suspect’s vehicle. Gunfire was exchanged, the suspect was hit multiple times and later died.

A deputy was injured in a wreck.

WTVY reports the suspect may have been a member of the military.

Below, video from the scene of Hughes and Dothan Police spokeswoman Sgt. Rachel David describing the incident.
