SYLACAUGA, Alabama — The Tallageda Daily Home reports that members of the Sylacauga City Council took part in serial meetings before voting on a retail developer for the city’s property on U.S. 280.
Councilman Ken Horn says the unannounced, private meetings took place the week before the council’s May 16 work session. He says he and other members of the council met two at a time with representatives from Retail Specialists, the company developing the property, and Merchant Capital, an investment firm.
The meetings never contained a quorum, or three members, of the council at the same time and therefore did not violate any law. The council approved the authorization at its May 17 regular meeting by a 5-0 vote.
The Jefferson County Commission used the same tactic Sunday to meet with Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange to discuss the countys’ plans for a possible bankruptcy filing over multi-billion dollar sewer system debts.
