The Shelby County Drug Task Force and Shelby County Drug Coalition netted close to 250 pounds of unwanted or expired prescription drugs as part of last weekend’s “National Take Back Initiative.”

The drugs were collected from people who brought the medications to the Alabaster Target and Greystone YMCA.

“Alabama is ranked fifth in prescription pill abuse and we are constantly working cases involving pill addiction,” Lt. Chris George, commander of the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force, said in a news release. “Unfortunately, a lot of these pills come from the medicine cabinets of parents and grandparents. I encourage everyone, especially those with middle school and high school aged children, to keep their medications locked up and to properly dispose of them when they are no longer needed.”
