MOBILE, Alabama — Sarah Brock of Tennessee was named the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2011 during the 54th annual National Finals tonight at the Mobile Civic Center Theater.
Formerly known as America’s Junior Miss, the scholarship program began in Mobile in 1958. The young women were competing for $142,000 in cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2011.
This year, America’s Junior Miss 1994, Amy Osmond Cook, served as emcee for the finals.
The program for graduating high school seniors almost folded six years ago when several sponsors backed out after it lost its national TV deal. In recent years, and tonight, the national finals are being streamed live on the Internet by www.local15tv.com
The competition is broken down into five categories: scholastics, interview, talent, fitness and self-expression. A panel of judges reviewed all the girls’ transcripts before the competition started, to grade their scholastic achievements.
