The sound of guns firing, flashes of blue and gray, commands being shouted. No, you’re not dreaming! It’s the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War and Historic Philadelphia is bringing us “Civil War Summer.” With numerous themed events and the summer spotlighted by “Civil War Weekend,” spectators are sure to have a memorable time. From Memorial Day through to Labor Day, visitors will have the opportunity to meet famous people from the Civil War era, participate in historical story time and gaze at the reconstructed flag made by Betsy Ross’ daughter.
With all of the anticipation of the Civil War commemoration, the main event is sure to be to Civil War Weekend, taking place from July 1 to July 4. This special tribute will consist of many activities, including the Civil War Road Show, which will be the only chance residents will have to see it in the Philadelphia area. The free Road Show will take place in Franklin Square for Independence Day weekend in its expansive 18-wheel trailer. It’s a interactive traveling exhibit that journeys to various counties in Pennsylvania educating people about the state and the Civil War.
Be sure to stop by the Betsy Ross House for a peek at its latest exhibit, Rally ‘Round the Flag. This exhibit commemorates flag-carriers, one of the riskiest jobs on the battlefield and features stories and photographs. Another inspiring sight is the flag made by Clarissa, Betsy Ross’ daughter, which will be on display for the first time. Rally ‘Round the Flag is an exhibit that honors those who fought to protect our flag. Discussions will be held about the importance of those who died carrying the American flag around the battlefield, including women flag-carriers.
Regarding the “Civil War Summer,” Amy Needle, president and CEO of Historic Philadelphia Inc. and resident of Merion Station, said, “Historic Philadelphia Inc. has been proud to bring history to life from the Revolutionary Era and now we’re proud to add the Civil War to help bring back 300 years of history.”
Another major event will be the opportunity to meet history makers such as Octavius Catto. Catto was a civil rights activist and abolitionist who died aiding African Americans to vote on Election Day in 1871 in Philadelphia. He was a free African American educator who wanted to grant freedom to all fellow African Americans. Come hear his stories and many other famous people from the Civil War era. On July 2 at 11 a.m., visitors are invited to a free book signing of “Tasting Freedom: Octavius Catto and the Battle for Equality in Civil War America,” by authors Daniel Biddle and Murray Dubin. Along with the book signing, storytellers will be spread out among 13 locations in the historic district enlightening children about the Underground Railroad and generals from both sides of the war.
Experience the Civil Rights Movement in 3-D! Liberty 360 is a new 15-minute show that gives viewers a “360 degree experience” by Benjamin Franklin. This show will give people a picture of the expedition from the Emancipation Proclamation to the Civil Rights Movement. It’s open for the first time as a year-round attraction held indoors at the PECO Theater in the Historic Philadelphia Center, located across the street from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
There are many different activities to keep children occupied in Philadelphia this summer. Have the kids join the Continental army in the Military Muster. Or take pictures with important people from the Civil War era such as Betsy Ross or various generals. With all the flurry of activities surrounding “Civil War Summer,” no one is going to be bored this summer.
