HOMEWOOD, Alabama — Half of the contestants in the 2011 Miss Alabama pageant visited Children’s Hospital in Birmingham today. The other half of contestants visited on Thursday morning. They, along with Miss Alabama 2010 Ashley Davis, did arts and crafts with patients there, said Sander Seals, a pageant mother.

Mistress of Ceremonies tonight was Kalyn Chapman James, Miss Alabama 1993. The pageant’s theme this year is “90 Years of Excellence.” To honor Miss America’s roots in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, the stage was decorated with long silver streamers and contestants danced to the tunes of “Viva Las Vegas” and “Under the Boardwalk.”

There was a tie for the talent preliminary competition.

Miss Tennessee Valley KeLeigh Edwards won with her song, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and Miss University of Alabama Valerie Stewart won with her song, “To Where You Are.” They will both receive a $450 scholarship.

Miss Central Alabama Rebecca Whitlow won the swimsuit preliminary. She will receive a $300 scholarship.

Preliminary competitions were also held on Wednesday night and on Thursday night.

Saturday’s final judging will see the top 10 semi-finalists compete in the talent, swimsuit and evening wear competitions. Five finalists will then be selected.

Each finalist will be asked a final on-stage question.

Then the new Miss Alabama will be crowned.
