HOMEWOOD, Alabama — The 90th anniversary of the Miss Alabama Pageant kicked off with preliminary competitions tonight at the Samford University’s Wright Center. Three winners were announced in two preliminary competitions.

Contestants answered onstage questions on topics ranging from social networking to offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

Miss Trussville Anna Laura Bryan won the talent preliminary with her operatic rendition of “Sempre Libera.” Talent preliminary winners receive $450 scholarships.

Miss Center Point Chandler Champion and Miss St. Clair Area Meschelle Stringer tied in the swimsuit competition.

“I don’t believe in breaking ties,” said Nan Teninbaum, executive director of the Miss Alabama scholarship program. “I believe if she earned the points, she deserves the recognition and scholarship.”

Swimsuit preliminary winners receive a $300 scholarship.

One of the judges, Miss Alabama 1992 Kim Wimmer, had to leave before tonight’s ceremonies began due to a serious illness suffered by a member of her family. As she completed the interview portion of judging earlier Wednesday, her scores will still be counted.

“Miss America rules of judging are designed to address situations such as this,” said Wendy McDougal, tonight’s mistress of ceremonies and Miss Alabama 1991.
