HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA - Strong thunderstorms packing winds of up to 50 miles per hour dumped torrential rains across North Alabama Thursday evening.
Kris White with the National Weather Service office in Huntsville said they officially recorded .65 inches of rain in a 20-minute period from about 8 to 8:20 p.m. at Huntsville International Airport.
“Earlier today in Lauderdale County radar estimated up to 5 inches per hour of rain falling. But we have not had confirmation of that much actually measured” White said.
A flash flood warning was issued by the National Weather Service for Madison County Thursday night from 9 p.m. until midnight.
Roadways flooded included First Street, Governors Drive in the construction area at the hospital and Washington Street near Oakwood.
Several roads were almost a foot deep in water and several vehicles were stalled in the roadway, according to Huntsville police.
Several parking lots in Huntsville reportedly had several inches of water standing in them during the heaviest rainfall.
Frequent lighting also created a tremendous light show for Madison County residents as night fell.
