BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Two suspects are in custody in connection to a beating death this morning in the Southtown public housing community, but Birmingham police said tonight charges have not been filed.
Oscar Shoemaker, 35, of Birmingham was assaulted just after 2:15 a.m.
Officers found Shoemaker with head wounds, said Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. He was taken to UAB Hospital were he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said the victim was beaten and kicked by a group of males.
The assault took place in the parking lot between two rows of apartments. One resident said Shoemaker had been staying at one of the Southtown apartments with friends, but was kicked out this week.
Investigators have not disclosed a motive in the killing.
A second homicide occurred less than 12 hours later when Patrick Dewayne Peoples, 22, of Fairfield was shot about 1:30 p.m at Alemeda Apartments on Alemeda Court.
A suspect is in custody in that case, too.
