CSX railroad officials are investigating the cause of a train derailment this afternoon near U.S. 31 in Calera.
CSX Spokeswoman Carla Groleau said the incident occurred at 3 p.m. in the Calera CSX Rail Yard. Two locomotives and one box car left the rails on a train with 65 cars carrying a cargo of maintenance rocks, which was en route to Birmingham.
Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley said the first locomotive turned over on its side, while the other two cars remained upright. The engineer in the lead engine sustained minor injuries and was taken to Shelby Baptist Hospital, he said.
When the engine overturned, it leaked some diesel fuel onto the ground. By late afternoon, all the fuel had been removed from the scene and removed from the engine’s tanks.
Though the cause of the derailment is under investigation, Lemley said the locomotive overturned because of a broken track. By late afternoon, police, fire and railroad workers had the area around the yard sealed off as cleanup work began.
