TARRANT, Alabama — A Tarrant police car stolen during a traffic stop this afternoon has been recovered and a suspect is in custody, according to Police Chief Dennis Reno.

The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. when the officer pulled the car over on McCaskill Street.

As the officer approached the car to get the driver’s license, a passenger jumped out of the car and ran.

As the officer chased the passenger, the car that was stopped drove away.

The officer notified other Tarrant police officers by radio and they soon stopped the suspect’s car and arrested him. Reno said the driver had warrants for drug charges in Georgia.

The officer gave up the foot chase only to find that his marked patrol car was also gone.

Reno said he suspects the passenger doubled back during the foot chase and drove off in the still running marked car.

The police car was found a short time later hidden between two houses less than a block away. The passenger has not yet been arrested.
