BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Two people were injured in a shooting tonight near the Tom Brown Village public housing community, Birmingham police said.

Sgt. Joe Roberts said he did not know the conditions of the injured. Paramedics took them to UAB Hospital. No one is in custody, Roberts said.

Officers have roped off the intersection of 41st Street North and Fifth Court North.

More than two dozen Birmingham police officers were on the scene along with several Birmingham firefighters.

Onlookers who gathered near the scene said they heard about 50 gunshots shortly before police arrived just after 8 p.m.

Wanda Thomas, a former Tom Brown resident who was in the area during the incident, said it is outsiders — not residents of the community — who cause of problems in the area.

“This is awful,” she said. “Innocent people are out here in the middle of this. It’s not fair to the people who live here.”
