GADSDEN, Alabama — People in Gadsden weren’t exactly complaining when a storm blew through Saturday afternoon.

It seems the crowds gathered for RiverFest 2011 appreciated the cooling waters on the hot day, the Gadsden Times reports. Temperatures dropped from the 90s to the 70s in minutes and, although some chairs, umbrellas and portable toilets blew over, most people appeared happy to cool off, the newspaper reports.

Randy Travis was among the headliners and there was a capacity crowd.

Tuscaloosa group visits Kansas town that recovered from a tornado: A group from Tuscaloosa traveled to Greensburg, Kansas, which found itself 95 percent destroyed by a monster tornado in 2007, the Tuscaloosa News reports. The 10-member Tuscaloosa contingent sought to learn lessons about rebuilding after such a disaster.

Cam Newton’s mother to speak at Gadsden Baptist center: Jackie Newton, the mother of Heisman Trophy winner Cameron Newton, will speak at 11 a.m. Saturday at a luncheon at Antioch Baptist Family Life Center in Gadsden in Gadsden. A Florida entrepreneur, Charles Smith, also is to speak, the Gadsden Times reports.

Auburn police get grant to track sex offenders: The Auburn Police Division was recently awarded an $89,600 Community Oriented Policing Service grant from the Department of Justice to help track sex offenders, the Opelika-Auburn News reports. The grant will be shared by Auburn, Opelika and Lee County.

First responders take part in Operation Red Dragon: In Pell City, members local first responders worked with Army Reserve units on Saturday in an exercise known as Red Dragon to tell how the Reserve units could coordinate with the local first responders to react to a biological hazard scenario, the Daily Home of Talladega reports. Pell City Fire Chief Patrick Draper told the Daily Home that the operation went very well, with good communication between the groups.
